The Journey

About the Book

Explore Mornington Peninsula was created over countless drives, walks, early mornings, return visits and collaborations across the Peninsula. This is the story behind the book.

Four regions

One Peninsula

More than a collection of photographs.

Explore Mornington Peninsula is designed as a journey through the region.

Each chapter moves through one of four distinct parts of the Peninsula, combining large format photography with local detail to give every area its own identity.

The aim was not simply to photograph beautiful places.

It was to create a broader portrait of the Peninsula and the many different landscapes, communities and experiences that make it what it is.

Look up

Up in the sky

My childhood was spent taking photos from the ground, I thought I’d seen every square inch of the Peninsula.

10 years ago I purchased my first drone. From the very first flight I felt like I was a stranger again in a place I’d spent my whole life.

Familiar places suddenly looked foreign and i could again re-appreciate the beauty of where I live.

One trip at a time

Thousands of photos later

The project developed through countless trips across the region over years and years. Returning to locations in different weather and seasons, researching landmarks and gradually working out how each part of the Peninsula should be represented.

Tens of thousands of photos were reduced to thousands.
Thousands of photos were reduced to hundreds.
The final 300 made it to the book.

Built for exploring.

What’s inside?

Rather than arranging the book purely around individual photographs, each section follows the geography of the Peninsula.

That structure gives the book a sense of movement.

You can follow it from beginning to end, jump directly to somewhere familiar, or simply open it at random and start exploring from there.

Colour coded, categorised and simple to navigate.

From page to place

The book is only the beginning

The goal was always for the book to do more than sit on a shelf. I wanted it to make people curious. To recognise somewhere familiar. To discover somewhere they had never been. To point at a page and say, “We should go there.” If the book gets you out exploring the Peninsula for yourself, then it has done what I hoped it would.

Made independently

Built Collaboratively

The vision for Explore: Mornington Peninsula is a personal project, but its final form has been shaped by many people.

Throughout the project, collaborators contributed photography, knowledge, stories and local perspectives that helped broaden the way the Peninsula is represented.
