Behind the book

Hello

I'm Julian Varricchio

Photographer, Creator, Author.

I was born here, raised here and still live here today.

Its beaches, backroads, town centres and landscapes have been around me for as long as I can remember, and photography became my way of looking at them more closely.

Over time, familiar places became new again.

A road I had driven countless times could suddenly reveal something different. A beach I thought I knew could completely change with the light, weather or season.

That sense of rediscovery sits at the heart of Explore Mornington Peninsula.

Where it began

Life on the
Mornington Peninsula

What started as a simple interest in photography became a way of understanding home differently. It is a personal project shaped by years of returning, noticing, exploring and documenting the place that has always been closest to me.

Where it began

I've live on the Mornington Peninsula all my life.

What started as a simple interest in photography became a way of understanding home differently. It is a personal project shaped by years of returning, noticing, exploring and documenting the place that has always been closest to me.

More than 25 years of friendship sit behind every Origins edition.

01

A shared interest

Julian and Jack met at school. A trip to Sovereign Hill helped begin a long-running conversation about history, architecture and why some places stay with us.

02

Looking at home again

The Mornington Peninsula became the first subject. Historical photographs made familiar streets, pubs and coastlines appear strange again, and showed how much had changed in plain sight.

03

From one book to a series

The response to the first edition opened the way to Ballarat, Melbourne and New York. Each place asks for its own approach, but the purpose remains the same: look carefully, research properly and make a book worth keeping.

04

Why print matters

A large-format book gives photographs and stories room to sit together. It becomes a physical record that can be shared around a table and returned to years later.

Places change. The stories they hold do not disappear. They wait to be found again.

The invitation

Explore the pages.Witness the development.Envision the future.

Origins is a way of looking again: at the streets we know, the people who came before us and the details that make a place feel like home.
